That's weird. hotplug should just plug and play.

Nothing was done with my xorg.conf settings at all.

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option      "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
        Option      "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"

is what I use.. For Touchpad/trackpad and usb mouse.
