Workshop:   6 - 7 November 2003

Hosted by KDU Management Development Centre (KMDC), Kuala Lumpur.

Objectives

As part of its OSS101 programme to create awareness of the benefits and to promote the usage of open-source software (OSS), the MNCC Open Source SIG (MNCC-OSSIG) is holding two seminars and a workshop at the KDU Management Development Centre (KMDC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The seminars will introduce open-source software (OSS) in general to those who are interested to know more about it. In particular they will attempt to demonstrate to the attendees how OSS can be used on a daily basis to enrich their personal computing experience and to introduce to them the concepts, philosophy and ideals behind the OSS movement. After the two seminars the attendees should have some idea on what OSS is and how it can be deployed on a daily basis.

The two day workshop will provide hands-on training to the attendees on the popular Linux operating environment on PCs as well as office productivity applications. At the end of the workshop, the attendees should be in a position to start using a Linux PC for their personal computing needs.

Seminar I: OSS Daily

This seminar will allow the audience to listen to a real-life experience of the joys and frustrations in switching over from the Windows operating environment to the Linux environment and running open-source applications. Demonstrations on how OSS can be used on a daily basis in the office will also be given.

Seminar II: Open Source Software - Background, Benefits and Realities

The presentation will give the audience a brief history of OSS, its basic philosophies and tenets as well as the advantages of embracing it both from the personal and national point of view. Some of the myths and realities concerning OSS will also be discussed.
