Public Talk on the Impact of the Free Software
Movement on the Public Sector and Education
by Richard M. Stallman on 20th Oct 2004 at KMDC, Plaza Sentral
UNDP-APDIP and MNCC, with the partnership of MAMPU and KMDC, will be
organizing a seminar by Richard M. Stallman on the Impact of the Free
Software Movement on the Public Sector and Education.
The Free Software movement highlights the issues regarding the
importance of free software for sustainable development and sovereignty.
For developing countries intending to develop a knowledge based economy
it is now crucial to assess the implications and impacts of
restrictions that are imposed by copyrights and patents and to examine
and assess the arguments introduced by the Free and Open Source
Software model.
Date : 20th October 2004
Time: 10:30am - 1pm
Venue: KDU Management Development Centre (KMDC)
Level 20, Tower 3A,
Plaza Sentral,
KL Sentral
Speaker: Richard M. Stallman

About the Speaker
Richard Matthew Stallman (RMS; born March 16, 1953) is the founder of
the Free Software movement, the GNU project, the Free Software
Foundation, and the League for Programming Freedom. He invented the
concept of copyleft to protect the ideals of this movement, and
enshrined this concept in the widely-used GPL (General Public License)
for software.
He is a notable programmer whose major accomplishments include GNU
Emacs, the GNU C Compiler, and the GNU Debugger. Since the mid-1990s
Stallman has relinquished most of his software engineering duties in
order to focus on the advocacy of free software. His remaining
development time is devoted to GNU Emacs. He is currently supported by
various fellowships, maintaining a modest standard of living while
discharging his duties as an itinerant evangelist and "philosopher" of
free software.

Rusty Russell is a Linux kernel hacker living in Australia, working for
IBM's Linux Technology Center whose mission is to "Make Linux Better"..
He's also a frequent and talented speaker at Linux gatherings. When
talking about Rusty in an earlier interview, Andrew Morton summarized,
"he's just a really sharp and witty guy - anyone who has attended one
of
his sessions at a conference will attest to that!"
Well known for his packet filtering efforts, having written both ipchains and netfilter/iptables, he has continued to make an impressive number of contributions to Linux kernel development. A large sampling of his current projects have been merged into the 2.6 kernel, including futexes, per-cpu counters, hot pluggable CPU support, and a complete rewrite of the in-kernel module loader. His team’s key focus area is Linux for the PowerPC processor.
